The first step to decorating your living room is to remove all the clutter. Discard pile of magazines, which obviously from a coffee table and end table, and remove all small collection. You can bring the collection back once you decide how the room will look, but for now, you want to remove all objects that distract you from designing your room. Rearrange the furniture, so you have good traffic flow and there are things that disturb the flow. You should be able to move to the sofa and chair without moving around objects. Create an area for conversation. Arrange your furniture so you can easily talk with friends or family visit.
Focal Point and Accessories
Select an area of space for your focus point. This could be a set of large windows, sofa wall, fireplace, or entertainment center. Once you decide on a focal point, choose a color, accessories, and lighting to enhance the point. The colors that contrast or complement the focal point is a good choice. Decorate around the focal point. If your focal point is the fireplace, adding a big, tall candle into layers. If the focal point is the sofa, add colorful pillows or a throw, and try to put the books stacked sideways on the coffee table. Place plants near a focal point for the interest is added. Avoid too many small objects. Stick with an odd number like three or five to the top of the mantle, the pictures on the walls, or objects in the main entertainment.
LightingLighting adds mood, functionality, and brighten the focal point. If the focal point are the windows, consider window treatments that allow natural light. Track lighting works well if you want to highlight a work of art. Floor lamps are an excellent choice for added decoration and functionality. Always make sure you have a lot of light to read, too.
